Jim Thompson

THOMPSON, James Ernest “Jim” – Passed away peacefully at his home, after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 with his loving family by his side at the age of 64.

Loving son of Irene “Bubbles” Thompson. Dear brother of Sandra Smith, and Lorri Burns and her husband Matt. Cherished uncle of Ashley Smith, Matthew Burns and his wife Jaylene, Dalton Burns, and Emily Burns. Predeceased by his father Lennard Thompson.

Jim was a graduate of Conestoga College in Waterloo, majoring in Retail Meat Cutting; as well as Georgetown College, majoring in Building Maintenance Mechanic and Wood Floor Installation. He became a flooring specialist and owned his own businesses, mainly in Guelph. Jim also worked as an addiction counsellor at Addictions and Community Services, working in a treatment centre for men who were addicted to drugs and alcohol. He also enjoyed other jobs including being a meat cutter in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, and a cook at Pike Lake for a few years. Up until this year, many may have seen Jim at their door delivering pizza. Jim made many friends throughout his life, and always enjoyed meeting new people.

Jim gave his heart to the Lord Jesus in his late 20’s and was a member of Parkview Church in Guelph.

A highlight in Jim’s life was two Caribbean Cruises in 2022 and 2023, thanks to his best friend, John Litwiller whom he travelled with. In Jim’s words, he had a wonderful life and enjoyed most of it.

My condolences on your loss. I have known Jim through my Sister Angie since his days in Acton and he was a friend of the family for many years. He was always such a good friend to my Sister, a happy, kind and generous person. I met Jim for the last time during his last days at Grand River Hospital. Jim could have easily been unaccepting of situation, he could have been consumed with grief. Jim was quite the opposite, he was a model for us all in how he accepted and chose to spend the remaining days of his life trying to uplift those who came to see him. He chose to spend his time helping others in the later stage of his life -- a remarkable choice to use his experience to help others, he will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear the news of Jim's passing. Although I haven't seen him in many years, the night we talked on the phone it felt like the years just disappeared. He is and was a good soul, his laugh was contagious. Like Jim said, he will be greeted with open arms when he reaches heaven with all the family members we have lost. You will be missed. May you rest 🙏 in peace.

I met Jim in my early 20's. We would become roommates living in Guelph. We had so many great times in that old house on Nottingham St. I remember he loved to cook, and I loved to eat. He did have a big heart and he welcomed anyone into that house. He had a dream one night and from that dream we would host Band jam and BBQ 92. We had Christian musicians from the Guelph area come and play in the park. All to raise funds for the local foodbank. I got the bands lined up and Jim looked after the BBQ. I don't remember how much we raised but we did get mentioned in the paper.
Although we wouldn't do the best of staying in touch, every time we did talk we were taken back to that time in our lives.
The last time we talked I was able to express how much he meant to me.
Thanks for being my friend Jim. I'll see you soon! Make sure you cook up a good meal for me.

"Jim gave his heart to the Lord Jesus in his late 20’s "

Delighted to have read that, - it means that he has just migrated to Heaven and he'll be looking down on us and trying to tell us to stop crying. Although, I always tell folk TO cry, - to empty yourself of your sorrow, THEN, fill that space with memories.

— Colin Ross, January 2, 2025

I went to school with Jim and ran into him again after he moved back to the Mount Forest area. We had a lovely visit catching up with each other and remembering old times. He was a sweet soul with a sunny smile. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
