Condolences

I met Steve when we moved to Mount Forest in 1970, he lived in the apartment above us, I remember the awesome fantasy table hockey league we created, we sure spent a lot of hours playing that game. Very sad to hear about his passing. Our thoughts are with the Schwindt family.

Steve-O and I shared many in depth conversations about the grocery business over the years. He had a passion for his job which was unmatched.
He cared deeply about his work and will be greatly missed at Fretz's valu-mart. I cannot thank him enough for his dedication and loyalty over the last 15 years.
I will miss our morning chats about all sports (especially hockey), local news and what his plans were for that week and beyond.
Our condolences to the family.

You loved your Toronto Maple Leafs & the Sauble Generals hockey teams, your music collection (alphabetically organized of course), your roller skating & your work at the ValuMart (especially when Labour Day Weekend was near)
Rest easy now Schwindie and keep your stick on the ice, axles loose and music loud till we meet again.

So sad to hear of Steve s passing. Always enjoyed playing center with Steve on my wing. No hesitation in pushing me to move it, all the while with a big grin on his face and a goofy laugh. Great teammate on and off the ice.

I was so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Steve was a good friend in high school and I will always remember him as such a kind and gentle guy. Our small class was close and we spent a lot of time together. Everyone always felt good in his presence! I have so many fond memories of times spent in Sauble at the north end with him, and at the roller rink of course. Anyone could recognize his signature skating style, from a mile away... and lucky was the girl that he would take around the rink with him for a spin. Great memories of time together at WDHS, from the shenanigans that were partaken in, to the moments in class when you realized that Steve had the concept being covered that day all figured out already and he didn't have to work at it, at all like the rest of us mere mortals. My sincere condolences to the family. He will be missed.

— Donna Simmie Stewart, October 26, 2024

Steve had many talents, he was a great guy with a kind heart, valuable employee(talented grocery manager) no one could realign shelves like Steve. One of the best wingers the Sauble Generals ever had. Hosted many after hockey game parties, with crokinole and euchre games. Loved his roller skating, we could count on Steve for every sport update.
He was the biggest record collector and knew his music. Heaven will never be the same with their new DJ. You will be missed by many.
Condolences to your family and friends

I had the pleasure of playing many a hockey game with Steve and the Sauble Generals years ago. I was in goal and recollect how ferocious a back checker Steve was. He loved to mix it up in the defensive zone corners and steal the puck against all odds.
He was a true and honest competitor who gave his all every time on the ice. Steve opened his home up to the team post game for a few beers and fellowship many a time after an important game, win or lose.
Thanks my friend!

I have fond memories of Steven when he first moved to Sauble as we went to school together, played sports together on the same teams and against each other as we grew older.
Steve was always a joy to meet. Always a kind, caring person just as I remember his parents being.
God speed Steve.
Thanks for the memories!

Steve was a WDHS school mate, who was clever, witty and easy to talk to. I always enjoyed and will remember our conversations.
As his mail lady, I always hoped to see him when delivering his mail. I know he loved his music and to roller skate.

Very saddened to hear of Steven’s passing. Our Sincere Condolences to the Cook,Schwindt and Goldie families. When Steven and his parents moved into Mt.Forest their home was just around the corner from ours. Steven did his best to hang out and play with us in the neighbourhood but we were almost all girls just a couple of boys. So we knew each other from Grade 2 (his sister Marilyn was my Gr.2 Teacher) in public school through the first year of high school. Had the chance to catch up with Steven a few years ago which was great. I’ll always remember how kind he was to me and how much fun he was as a kid. Till we meet again Steve

— Carol Weiser Small, October 24, 2024

— Rachel Smeijers, October 24, 2024

Many happy and fond memories of Steve thru high school. Whether on teams or in class Steve was always a positive force to behold. Years of travelling on hockey buses, singing songs and playing hockey have always left me with fond memories of our youth. Meeting at the old roller rink in Sauble was a classic. I had the privilege of running into Steve a few years back at Sauble and we spent a little time letting the past reawaken as we laughed. He never changed. My condolences to the family and wish Steve a safe and speedy journey to the other side, may the wind always be at your back.

I worked with Steve for over 12 years at Valu-Mart. He was dedicated, hard working and a great man. Steve never missed work and he never missed a hockey game. I will miss our little hockey talks in the aisles lamenting about our beloved Maple Leafs. He will be sorely missed at the store. Rest easy, Steve-o. Go Leafs go.

— James Fretz, October 24, 2024

I worked with steve at coulters grocery back in the early 80s. He knew his work and did it well.
Our condolences

— David and Linda fowler, October 24, 2024

I grew up with Steve at the north end of Sauble. We were such a small group of friends of all ages who came together to play road hockey, play baseball, football and just hang out. Steve worked at Low's Food Market back then. I think he went to the IGA in Wiarton and then Coulters, Vince's Food Mart in Owen Sound, and was always a friendly face at Fretz's Valu Mart. There will be many kind words shared about Steve. My deepest condolences to all the family. May he rest in peace. I'm sure he and George Low will be getting together and enjoying some laughs and memories.
